This Mercury STEREO record has been out with variable groove spacing and electronic groove depth control, thus producing a 2-channel disc of exceptionally wide dynamic range, reliable stylus trackfing throughout the frequency range, and startling clarity and dennttton of 'instrumental timbres. HI-Fl Information This stereophonic session was recorded at Universal Recording, Chicago. The four trombones and four trumpets, set up as a section, were picked up by a Telefunken U-47 and an RCA 77DX for recent and sensitive pickup of muted portions of the arrangement. The five saxes or doubles thereof, set as a section, worked to an RCA 44 BX. Rhythm section was recorded as a group, although individual mikes were used: bass-Western Eleetric 639; piano-RCA44BX; and drums-Telefunken U-47. Bernie Clapper, engineer on the date, set the band up tightly, as they would work in a ballroom, to maintain the cohesive "swing feel" of the 17 men. Universal's Studio A, among the largest in the world (about the size and cubic depth of a basketball fieldhouse), was used to get a real "live" ballroom sound for the dance-aimed recording. Ampex 350-2 (modified) were used to tape the two-ehannel session at 30 inches per second.. Two Telefunken U-47, suspended directly in front of and about 10,feet above and 12 feet apart were the direct left and right channel pickups.
